Insider knowledge

What happens at a Wine Tasting?

Wine Tasting is not just about “drinking wine” – it is a conscious exploration of flavour, aroma and structure. It is about:

  • Recognising aromas – What fruit, spice or minerality can be found in the wine?
  • The influence of terroir – How does the soil and climate characterise the wine?
  • Comparisons and differences – How do vintages, types of vinification or regions of origin differ?
  • The perfect food pairing – Which wines go with which dishes

A Wine Tasting can be led by professional winemakers or simply be a social gathering of wine lovers.

When is the best time for Wine Tasting?

Winemakers agree: the right time for Wine Tasting is individual. However, there are a few recommendations for perfect enjoyment:

    • In the morning or early evening – this is when the taste buds are most sensitive

.

    • With a neutral palate – It is best not to eat anything hot or extremely spicy before tasting.
    • In a pleasant environment – Quiet, relaxed and with good lighting to see the colour of the wine

.

  • Not overloaded – It is better to savour a few wines consciously than to try too many at once.

Johannes Gross adds: “A tasting shouldn’t be stressful – it’s about consciously engaging with the wine.”

.

How do I prepare for a Wine Tasting?

Do you have to be an expert to take part in a Wine Tasting? No! – but a few tips will help you get the most out of the experience:

    • Be open-minded – Don’t be afraid of “technical” terms – just enjoy!
    • Stay neutral – No chewing gum, no strong fragrances (e.g. perfume) as they affect the flavour

.

  • Provide water – To neutralise between wines.
  • Take notes – Which wines did you like? Which flavours were recognisable?

Christoph Polz says: “Everyone has their own approach to wine – tastings help you discover your own personal taste.”

.

The most important steps of Wine Tasting

    1. Sight – The colour of the wine gives an initial indication of age, style and grape variety
    2. Smell – The bouquet reveals aromas of fruit, herbs, spices or wood

.

  1. Taste – The first impression, the structure, the acidity, the fruit and the finish.
  2. Following – How long does the flavour linger in the mouth? Does the wine continue to develop?

Wolfgang Maitz explains: “There is no right or wrong – everyone experiences wine differently. The only important thing is to engage with it.”

Be open, enjoy and rely on your own taste!

The most important thing!

Conclusion: Wine Tasting is for everyone!

Whether beginner or wine connoisseur – a Wine Tasting is an exciting journey through flavours, origins and the art of winemaking. Those who consciously engage with the wines discover completely new facets and enjoy them with all their senses.
