Wines of South Styria

When we talk about terroir, we mean the interplay of soil, climate and location. And it is precisely this interplay that is particularly diverse and unique in South Styria.

• The soils: In South Styria, lime marl, slate and sandstone dominate, giving the wines their typical minerality. This results in wines with exciting structure and fine flavour.
• The slopes: The steep vineyards allow optimal sun exposure, while the cool nights intensify the aroma development – a secret of the special freshness of the wines.
• The diversity of the vineyards: Each Ried (vineyard site) has its own character, which can be tasted in the wine.

South Styria lies at the interface between alpine, Pannonian and Mediterranean climates. This mixture brings with it warm days and cool nights – a decisive factor for the aromatic flavours and freshness of the wines.

• Warm days promote the ripening of the grapes and ensure intense fruit flavours.
• Cool nights maintain the acid structure and give the wines their unrivalled vibrancy.
• The autumn mists ensure slow maturation, allowing complex nuances of flavour to develop.

The South Styrian Wineroad is particularly well known for its outstanding white wines. The following varieties play a leading role:

• • Sauvignon Blanc – The flagship of the region with notes of gooseberry, paprika and exotic fruits

Each grape variety benefits from the special climatic conditions and produces wines that have a perfect balance of freshness, fruit and minerality.

The steep vineyards of South Styria require a lot of manual labour. Mechanised harvesting is hardly possible, which is why almost every grape is harvested by hand. This careful selection guarantees the highest quality and precisely matured wines.</p
