What characterises young wine?
If you listen or read carefully, its name gives it away: the Steirischer Junker is the result of the latest harvest from growing regions in Styria. Fresh from the vines directly into the cellar and after a short time into the bottle and from there into the glass of wine lovers, the dry, fragrant young wine impresses with its noble flavour.
The word “young wine” used to mean “young nobleman”, which in the context of the Styrian wine refers to both its youthfulness and its exceptional quality. Because not every young wine from Styriacancall itselfJunker. Candidate wines are tested twice in the laboratory for the requirements for the young wine (residual sugar content of no more than four grams per litre, alcohol content not exceeding 12 % vol. and corresponding production) and then put to the test by a six-member tasting committee.
How does it taste?
The classic among young wines is the dry white wine, which is usually produced as a cuvée from up to seven varieties. Rarely, however, one also finds single-varietal young winesand einenlowpercentages, which is produced as red– or rosé wine – for example as Schilcher. Since jthe Junker winegrower himself decides, which grapes he presses for his own Junker, the result is an incredible number of different varieties. However, they share their special elegance and the refreshing, tangy flavour that comes from the youthful, fruity aromas.
Due to its freshness, Steirischer Junker is ideal as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to regional, Styrian cuisine.
When was the young wine born?
More than twentyyears ago, the young wine was first launched on themarket. It is now considered one of the pioneers among all young Austrian wines and is traditionally presented to around four thousandparticipantson the Wednesday before St Martin’s Dayand only launched on the market afterwards. Unfortunately, this major event had to be cancelled for this year.
