Silver spoon in the Sekt?

Myth or truth:

Does a silver spoon of Sekt really keep you sparkling for longer?

Everyone who enjoys sekt or sparklingwine knows the problem: Once opened, the sparkling pleasure quickly loses its carbon dioxide. But there is an old trick that keeps doing the rounds – a silver spoon in the bottle should keep the Sekt fresh for longer.

But what’s the truth behind this myth? Andreas Muster spoke to Christoph Polz, cellar master at the Polz Winery, about this supposed insider tip.

The myth of the silver spoon

The difference lies in the detail

The spoon myth is just a myth!

Many people have heard of it, some use it – but no one actually knows whether it really works.

The idea: A silver spoon in the neck of the bottle is supposed to prevent the carbon dioxide from escaping. The explanation for this is based on the assumption that the metal lowers the temperature in the neck of the bottle, which changes the air compression and slows down the escape of the carbon dioxide

.

Sounds logical? Maybe it does. Does it really work? Unfortunately, no.

Does the silver spoon trick work?

Investigations and tests have shown that the silver spoon has no effect on the carbon dioxide in the Sekt. The bubbles continue to escape, with or without the spoon.

The fact is: As soon as a bottle is opened, the carbon dioxide slowly begins to escape – regardless of whether there is a silver spoon in the neck of the bottle or not. The only way to keep sparklingwine really sparkling for longer is to use a correct sparkling wine closure, which seals the bottle airtight.

Our tip: Just drink it up!

How does Sekt really stay fresh for longer?

If you don’t drink your Sekt or sparklingwine immediately, you can preserve the carbon dioxide longer with these methods:

    • Use a champagne stopper – Special champagne or sparkling wine stoppers keep the carbon dioxide in the bottle
    • Store in the refrigerator – cool temperatures slow down the release of carbon dioxide

.

  • Store the bottle upright – This preserves the carbon dioxide better.
  • Drink early 😉 – The easiest solution for sparkling enjoyment!

Conclusion: The silver spoon belongs in the cutlery tray - not in the champagne bottle

As charming as the idea is – the silver spoon trick is a modern-day fairy tale. If you really want to enjoy sparkling wine for longer, you should use a correct sparkling wine stopper and keep the bottle chilled.

.

And the best solution? Just enjoy while the Sekt is still bubbling!
