Sparklingwine vs. sparklingwine - what's the difference?

When it comes to sparklingwine, it can quickly become confusing. Prosecco, Spumante, Sparklingwine, Sekt, Winzersekt, Champagne – the list of names is long. But what are the real differences between these sparkling drinks? And above all, how can you tell the difference between sparkling wine and sparklingwine at first glance?

Sparklingwine vs. sparklingwine - which is better?

Andreas Muster, landlord, hotelier and wine lover on the South Styrian Wineroad, asked himself this very question and spoke to Christoph Polz, cellar master at the Polz Winery, about it.

Sparklingwine versus sparklingwine

The difference lies in the detail

The light, sparkling variant

Frizzante is the lighter and less carbonated version of a sparklingwine. It is characterised by a gentle perlage (the fine bubbles in the glass) created by natural or added carbon dioxide.

Typical characteristics of sparklingwine:
  • Lower pressure in the bottle (under 3 bar)
  • Light, refreshing carbonation, often through subsequent addition
  • Soft, unobtrusive flavour
  • Wire clip or screw cap instead of cork and agraffe

The high-quality, artisanal sparklingwine

In contrast, Winzersekt is a high-quality, traditionally produced sparklingwine that is produced in Austria according to strict guidelines. The carbon dioxide is created through classic bottle fermentation, just like champagne.

Typical characteristics of sparkling wine:
  • Higher pressure in the bottle (over 3.5 bar)
  • Fine, long-lasting perlage thanks to the traditional method
  • Complex flavours thanks to longer maturation on the lees
  • Corked with natural cork and agraffe (the wire basket over the cork)
  • Strict quality control & protected term in Austria

Winzersekt is therefore not a simple sparklingwine, but a genuine crafted product with a special character – perfect for special occasions or as a noble accompaniment to fine dishes.

Champagne – the crowning glory of sparklingwines

Champagne is a fine sparklingwine from Champagne (France), produced using the traditional bottle fermentation method. Only grapes from this region can be labelled Champagne. It impresses with its fine perlage, complex flavours and long maturation. A symbol of luxury and special moments!

Which fizzy drink suits which occasion?

Frizzlingwine is perfect for light-footed enjoyment – as an aperitif, for social gatherings or on hot summer days. Its fresh, uncomplicated style makes it the ideal companion for relaxed moments.

Vintage sparkling wine, on the other hand, stands for elegance, sophistication and fine flavours. It is particularly suitable for special occasions, fine menus or as an elegant alternative to champagne.
