Welschriesling
in the south of Styria

Why is the Welschriesling
so important for
South Styria?

When visiting South Styria, you should not miss out on sampling a glass of Welschriesling. Whether at a Wine Tasting along the South Styrian Wineroad, in a cosy Buschenschank (Traditional Wine Tavern) or as a refreshing accompaniment to a summer evening – this wine is as much a part of Styria as the rolling hills and picturesque vineyards. Discover the diversity of the Welschriesling and be inspired by its charm.

Although it contains the name “Riesling”, Welschriesling is not genetically related to the classic Riesling. Rather, it is a traditional variety that finds ideal conditions in Styria – especially along the South Styrian Wineroad. The combination of cool nights, warm days and mineral soils gives it its unmistakable elegance and structure.

Welschriesling - the underrated pearl of Styria
The underestimated pearl of Styria

Styria is internationally renowned for its excellent white wines, especially Sauvignon Blanc. However, there is one grape variety that is often overshadowed, even though it is of great importance to the region: Welschriesling. With its crisp freshness, fine citrus flavours and versatility, it plays an indispensable role in the South Styrian wine world.

Why Welschriesling plays a leading role in Styria

Versatility at the highest level

  • Regional identity: Welschriesling is one of the most widely cultivated varieties in Styria and a true ambassador for the region.
  • Pure enjoyment: Whether young and fresh or as a matured Prädikat wine – the range makes it exciting for wine lovers.
  • Perfect for socialising: No other Styrian wine is so synonymous with lightness and uncomplicated enjoyment.

Typical characteristics of the Styrian Welschriesling:

  • Fresh acidity, which makes it particularly lively
  • Aromatic notes of green apple, citrus fruit and white flowers
  • A lean body that makes it the perfect companion for many dishes

Whether as a light summer wine, elegant sparklingwine or even as a noble sweet Prädikat wine – Welschriesling is versatile. In Styria in particular, it is often vinified as a fresh, easy-drinking white wine that goes perfectly with regional specialities such as a classic Brettljause – traditional cold cuts or Styrian Backhend – crispy fried chicken. Welschriesling is also becoming increasingly important as a base for sparklingwines. Its fine perlage and pronounced acidity make it an ideal partner for Sekt with a Styrian character.
