Does wine have to be stored horizontally?
Myth or truth?
An interview with Johannes Gross (Winery Gross) about one of the most discussed questions in the world of wine
For generations, winemakers and wine lovers have been grappling with the question: Which closure is the right one for my wine? While natural corks were long considered the only true solution, more and more winemakers are now opting for screw caps. But is there a “better” choice or does it all depend on the type of wine?
Johannes Gross from the renowned Winery Gross in South Styria talks to Andreas Muster about the advantages and disadvantages of the different closures – and why the decision is often more complex than you might think.

The correct storage of wine is a frequently discussed topic among wine lovers and experts. But does wine really have to be stored lying flat? Or is this just an outdated rule from times gone by?
The right storage!
lying or standing
Why was wine stored horizontally in the past?
Traditionally, flat storage was considered the standard, especially for wines with natural corks. The reason:
-
- The cork stays moist and seals better
.
-
- The ingress of oxygen is prevented
.
- The wine can mature optimally for years or decades.
In particular for high-quality red wines with a long maturation period, horizontal storage is still recommended.
What is the best way to store wine?
Regardless of whether the wine is stored horizontally or vertically, there are a few important basic rules:
- Constant temperature – 10-14°C is ideal, without major fluctuations.
- Darkness – UV rays can damage the wine.
- No vibrations – Wine should be allowed to mature in peace.
- Sufficient humidity – Particularly important for natural corks (approx. 50-70%).
Conclusion: The answer is not black and white
Laying or standing? – The ideal storage method depends on the closure and the storage period. While wines with natural cork should be stored horizontally for long maturation, modern screw caps or glass corks can be stored upright without any problems.
At Ratscher Landhaus, each wine is individually stored to optimally preserve its character. Whether you are a wine lover or a collector – the right storage can make the difference between a perfect enjoyment experience and a disappointing drop.
Wine is poetry in bottles.
